| "I enjoy long
walks in nature absorbing the ‘feeling’ one gets from the beauty
of sunlit water lily ponds and the dense shadowy sub-tropical growth under
trees entwined with monkey vines. I snap away with my camera and zoom right
into the interiors of flowers. Lately I have become fascinated with wild
indigenous flowers such as, the flowers that precede bananas, and the obscure
Blood Lily (which has a stem strong enough to support the Black Sunbird
while it drinks the nectar.)
I am an instinctive artist and become immersed
in shading colours, enjoying form etc. So when I read an article on Flower
Psychometry and Colour Therapy, I realized that I related to everything
they said about the ‘feeling’ one gets when enjoying certain
colours and shapes of flowers. For example, red and green together, are
emotionally stabilizing.
Purple has a healing effect, while yellow is uplifting and cheering. Orange
gives us courage. White is calming and peaceful (think of white arum lilies
growing next to water). Blue has a cooling, tranquil effect."
Arlene is a Kwa-Zulu Natal artist and has been painting professionally
since 1988. Her works has been exhibited extensively by many of the country’s
prestigious art galleries S.A.G.I.D. (S.A. Guild of Interior Designers)
and the provinces elite interior decorators have at times invited her
to exhibit her paintings at their various showcase events.
"Before starting a new painting, I ask myself the
following questions (as I feel this keeps my work honest) Could I live
with it for the rest of my life and does it inspire me? If the answer
is yes, then I paint it. I love nature, the light and shade and colour
that it brings indoors, in a painting.
I must conclude that above all else my inspiration and
creative juices flow from One who is the true Artist, who created all
things bright and beautiful."
