Bridget Randall has had a life-long interest in the arts but despite
having sketched and painted watercolours from a young age, it was only
when she started to concentrate on sculpture that she found her true niche.
This interest was refined when she started taking classes in sculpture
with Anton Momberg in 1983, which she was able to do while working part
time as a biologist with her husband. She has her own kiln and fires all
but the largest ceramic pieces herself. Bridget started producing bronzes
in 1997 and has concentrated on this medium since then, usually working
in wax and having the pieces cast. She generally produces pieces less
than 50cm high but has produced larger works as well, notably a life-
sized warthog commissioned by the Read Gallery. SA Breweries purchased
eight running warthogs in 2001.
Bridget met her husband Rod at university where they were studying botany
and zoology respectively. Together they completed their respective M.Sc.
degrees while based in the Lowveld in private game reserves bordering
the Kruger National Park. They then worked for ten years studying seabirds,
chiefly African Penguins, on islands in Algoa Bay near Port Elizabeth.
When Rod joined the South African National Parks, they moved to the Karoo
National Park for a year and then later to George, now living in Sedgefield.
They try to spend time each year in reserves studying, sketching and photographing
wildlife.

" I chiefly do bronzes and ceramic sculpture.
I concentrate on animals, tending to avoid the big five. Each ceramic
sculpture is individually made using sketches and photographs as a basis.
I do not aim at total realism but try to capture the spirit of the animal.
With regard to painting, I work in watercolour
and ink. The subject matter is usually animals. "
