| Cliff Baard had no formal
training but showed an early talent for drawing and painting. He moved with
his parents from the Transvaal to the Cape at the age of ten and was enrolled
at Somerset House Preparatory School, Somerset West. When he won an art
competition the following year, his talent was encouraged and furthered
by his Headmaster, Les Webb, who arranged informal weekly lessons with Irma
Stern, one of the judges who had shown interest in meeting the young artist.
She continued to guide him for the next couple of years.
Cliff Baard retired from the computer industry in 2002 to pursue his
love of painting, working in oils on canvas. His major influences have
been the French Impressionists Cézanne, Monet, Pissarro and Degas,
while inspiration has also come from the South Africans Hugo Naude, Piet
van Heerden and Tito Fasciotti.
His aim is to paint the spirit of nature with sensation and different
tonal values that expresses a unified overall harmony in his landscapes,
not merely revealing the beauty of the scene but inviting the viewer to
discover something new on every viewing.
