In pursuit of Eden

This body of work sets out to explore the role contemporary landscape photography can play in creating social awareness about the importance of conservation of wilderness areas. The role of landscape photographer as conservationist has a long history. Photographs leave a valuable record of time and place. They celebrate the land – or mourn it. The photographer has the power to awaken the populace to the value of land as a precious resource.

The initial concept of documenting the landscape came from an urge to share my personal experience of and reflections on the Eden District – which covers the coastal areas of the Western Cape from Mossel Bay through to Plettenberg Bay.

The objective of identifying and photographing the remaining wilderness areas within the Eden District is to highlight their beauty and emphasize the importance of conserving them for future generations. ‘In pursuit of Eden’ employs both a topographical approach to documenting wilderness areas as well as a romantic approach which aims to highlight the dramatic beauty of these places. Supportive research into the work of Ansel Adams and Robert Adams, two key American landscape photographers, has underpinned this exhibition of works.

My aim is to engage viewers with the landscape so that they can form a connection with a physical place of conservation importance. All I can hope for is that people be moved by the sheer magnificence of the areas depicted and that these images play some part in highlighting the need to conserve the remaining wilderness areas that exist, not only in my small corner of the Western Cape, but in all of South Africa.

A young professional photographer and graphic designer with an academic background in Fine Art, Colin Stephenson is the co-director of a boutique photography and design studio in George in the Western Cape.

Colin’s photography communicates a deep and abiding fascination with landscape. Over the past 14 years he has developed personal bodies of Southern African and European landscape imagery. In his work he explores and embraces and explores both the traditional analogue and the experimental digital approaches to photography.

Colin has recently completed an Honours degree in Fine Art Photography through NMMU. His area of study explores the role landscape photography has played within raising environmental consciousness over the past century.
