Derek Jacobs' work is inspired by his enchantment with light effects in nature, and passion for the environment. He lives in Simon's Town with his wife Hilary and a 180 degree view of ever-changing False Bay. He regularly cycles around the South Peninsula for inspiration.

Derek's artistic talent was apparent in his youth. He wished to study art but his father advised him to choose a profession “where you can at least earn a living.” He became a good, successful architect, still practicing today.

In 1979 he entered the South Atlantic Race and cruised with Hilary for 3 years in the Americas, sketching and doing architecture projects en-route. Back home they resumed their practice in Cape Town for 13 years. Then they set sail east for 3 years, to explore Madagascar, East Africa, Zanzibar (to work a while), Chagos, Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. These journeys were beautifully captured by Derek in pen and ink.

Moving to art-rich Simon's Town, joining the Simon's Town Art Group (STAG) and painting courses with Greg Kerr and Ryno Swart futher propelled him on his artistic journey, as did visits to Venice and the art galleries of Europe.

He has exhibited  at STAG and SASA annual and merit exhibitions, a rewarding joint exhibition with Victoria Dryden and twice solo at the Lindbergh and Artists galleries.

His work hangs in homes around the world.
