| Retired Geologist, Faan Voges, of Barberton, Mpumalanga,
has, over the years, built up a reputation as a formidable local artist.
Faan was born on 30 January 1929 in the town of Postmasburg in the Northern
Cape. After matriculating from Kimberly Boys High School, he continued
his studies at Stellenbosch University majoring in Geology and Zoology.
He pursued a career as Geologist for Anglovaal from which he retired in
1989, giving him the time to pursue his passion for art.
From an early age Faan expressed his talent through mainly painting in
watercolours and charcoals, and, prior to his retirement, attended an
art course at Barberton Technical College. It was only after having attended
a number of art courses with Charles Gotthardt at Magaliesburg that his
interest and ability for sculpture came to the fore resulting in beautiful
clay images of our indigenous wildlife and people. A passionate nature-lover,
and living so close to Kruger National, Faan has made a close study of
the animals he so lovingly captures as sculptures – he has a particular
interest in elephants which he has closely observed, photographed and
studied for more than 50 years.
In 1995 he had his first work cast in bronze, a medium he has consistently
use since then.
Faan Voges’ works capture the essence of Africa’s indigenous
legacy, without pretension and fuss, in a style which appeals, captivates
and is timeless.
