MEZZOTINTS

WHAT IS A MEZZOTINT: A mezzotint is the product of a traditional printmaking technique where the surface of
the etching plate is punctured with a tool - the mezzotint rocker that has fine metal teeth. The surface is rocked
in eight different directions, ensuring that it is evenly worked and allowing each point to hold ink.
The artist then burnishes away the surface of the plate to obtain tonal graduation.
