| In the past and continuous present he has been inspired by
the celebrated poets D.J.Opperman and the Spanish poet Lorca. He references
the animated folklore of the Koi San sharing their elemental capacity
to metamorphose their surroundings into tales of magical shamanic import.
He is a powerful image maker who recognizes the edge of reality in his
horizon line, that division between the conscious and unconscious mind.
In the context of this exhibition, "Icons for a past Life",
he reflects on significant exhibitions since 1968. Working on a perspective
series he returns the 'Icon for Opperman' the first painting he made after
the traumatic series of eye operations. This painting was made 'close
up'; an assemblage of photographic images. The essential visual images
Opperman reflects on in 'Klipwerk' are used in a personal context.
Leon paints in tempera using raw pigments, egg and dammar varnish. Grounds
are prepared with French chalk, Titanium Oxide, Gelatine and Boiled Linseed
oil.
