| Born in the Great Karoo on the farm Hillmoore
near Steynsburg in 1952 where his mother, a single parent, worked as a
domestic worker.
During 1958 she moved to Cape Town where her brother lived in Matroosfontein,
to look for a better life for herself and her two sons, of whom Pieter
is the youngest.
He received his school education at the Bellville-South Primary School
where his art talent was discovered and where he received encouragement
from his teachers. During that time he was the winner of quite a few art
competitions.
He left school while in Standard 6 to go and help his mother earn a living
for themselves. In 1970 he joined Safmarine and worked as a seaman for
about three years.
During 1974 he went to Nigel to visit his brother during his holiday.
While in Nigel, he obtained work at Marley Tiles and decided not to go
back to sea. He lived and worked there until the end of 1977 when he decided
to return to Bellville.
In the beginning of 1978 he obtained work at Nettex SA and during that
year he continued his hobby as a painter.
During 1982 he took part in a group exhibition in the Belhar Community
Centre and again in 1983 in the Bellville Art Society. It was during this
year that he met the well-known South African artist, Gregoire Boonzaaier
with whom he became friendly.
Gregoire was a great inspiration in the development of Pieter’s
career as an artist over the past fifteen years.
Pieter has twenty years experience as an artist and gave up his career
as a Shift Foreman at Nettex SA at the end of August 1997 to embark on
a full-time career as an artist.
He had no formal training as an artist, but has by means of various artbooks
developed his art skills over the past years. He has also visited various
art museums to study the paintings of the old masters.
Numerous South African art collectors as well as art collectors abroad
are in possession of his work.
He has taken part in 24 exhibitions of which 23 were group and one was
a solo exhibition.
