| If you have ever traveled between the
Hantam and Van Wyk’s Vlei, or between Sutherland and Loxton, you
will know what inspires me. The sheer vastness of the landscape. The crisp,
clear contrast between brilliant light and dense shadow. The devine silence
at sunset when even a wind pump doesn’t dare to squeak.
Marvel at miles of ‘Bushmangrass’ after a good summer or
watch thunderclouds build up, only to dissipate or bless some luckier
farmer far away. Soak up the awesome colour of the Karoo ‘bossies’
with names like ‘Kriedoring’ & ‘Jakkalspis’.
It is difficult to return to the city with it’s pollution and stress.
The world of commercial art has given me the ability to observe and interpret.
I am grateful for that.
Twenty-six years ago I traded the Johannesburg advertising world for
Cape Town’s graphic design field. Since then The Great Karoo has
etched itself deeply into my heart and ushered in a new era in my life
as an artist.
