Kristen McClarty is a self-taught artist.
Kristen grew up in Zululand and started painting before she started school, applying herself to watercolour and then oil. She took art as a subject for matric, frustrating her art teacher with her persistent use of autonomous colour – applied to convey the mood or feeling of the subject rather than representing what others saw as the real colour.
Kristen studied commerce and law and practiced tax law for many years, working in large professional service firms. She left the corporate world a number of years ago to concentrate on her art.
Kristen paints Cape scenes in acrylic, enjoying its short drying time, while still having the body of oil if used with appropriate gel mediums. She brings her background and her approach to life to the canvas. She has recently starting combining charcoal and other mediums with acrylic.
Kristen started printmaking in early 2016, printing out of the Pangolin Press studio at Montebello Design Centre. She concentrates on linocut, reduction linocut and dry point intaglio, with traditional techniques such as chine-collé. As with her paintings, Kristen works from her surroundings in the Cape.
Kristen has exhibited in a number of Cape galleries including G2 Art, Red Gallery, Hout Bay Gallery, Grand Provence, Lindy van Niekerk Art Gallery, Chameleon Gallery (Kalk Bay), Art@Constantia (Groot Constantia) and The Dorp Street Gallery in Stellenbosch.
