Cobus van der Walt grew up in Stellenbosch
near Cape Town. In pursuit of developing his interest in art, evident from
a very early age, he completed a BA degree in Fine Arts at the University
of Pretoria in 1991.
During his formative years and especially during his time at university,
he grew very close to nature. He spent much time in Southern African bush,
a source of inspiration for many of his works, and still travels extensively
throughout the subcontinent.
Van der Walt is breaking new ground by applying contemporary methods
to traditional themes. Bulky, unframed canvases capture the vibrance of
the African veld – be it an expanse of wildflowers in Namaqualand
or blue wildebeest and zebra milling around on a dusty plain. Van der
Walt signs his works with the initials CAB, while the geographical co-ordinates
of the Southern African landscape being depicted serve as a unique title
to each. It is a landscape characterised by motion, evoking the immediacy
of the artist experience and the magnitude of the African plains. Van
der Walt believes that the moment he captures in oil on canvas are not
only true to his vision, but also the essence of Africa. He regards his
canvases as “bold”, giving an interpretation rather than a
reflection of the natural environment.
Although Van der Walt rarely exhibits, some of South Africa’s exclusive
private and corporate collectors have acquired of his works.
