Whenever we return from an outing John is bursting with creative energy and rushes to his studio to paint and thereby captures the essence of his most recent experiences - Hildegard Robert
John's love of travel, including visits to international
art galleries, exerts a major influence on his work.
In 2007 John spent three intensive months in Paris (in the Cité),
visiting galleries and experimenting in plein air painting, sharing his
perceptions and experiences with artists all over the world.
John took a particular interest in the role played by the Fauvists, Like
Matisse and Derian he was attracted by their use of strong colour and
now applies some of these techniques in his own works.
John has very recently spent time travelling and painting in Italy and
Spain, where again his interest in colour comes to the fore, as well as
his love of depicting street scenes in old villages and medieval towns.
Ploughed lands and cultivated fields also hold a strong appeal for him.
His special interests, however, remain caricaturing and portraiture.
John Robert is a highly perceptive artist. Once he was well known as
Cape Town’s publicity director and C E O of Captour. Today he tends
to step aside from the beaten track. He chooses his subject carefully,
often sympathetic to the intimate, less frequented places; a doorway,
a street scene in a Boland town, the sea crashing against rocks along
the coast, a glimpse of the particular ‘along the way’ as
he travels through the country – quick impressions expressed in
small and lively vignettes. He has a remarkable sense of place.
People tell stories about John Robert. Once, at a business meeting, he
made caricatures of his fellows on the paper napkins. He paints portraits
with a keen observant eye.
