KEN MCGILLIVRAY

Kenneth Ivor McGillivray (1947–)

Portfolio

Artist, author and editor, Ken is a Natal-born, Transvaal-raised Cape immigrant. In his later years he was able to indulge his passion for books by moving into the world of publishing. After collaborating with renowned book illustrator and artist Izak Vollgraaff, Ken was persuaded to join the Izak Vollgraaff Art Studio.
While living in Belgium, he translated Colour: A Timeless Booklet about Mixing Colours from Flemish to English. This exposé by Antwerp artist and art teacher Lieve Peeters inspired him further, as did the artworks created by Lieve and her partner, artist Bart Laerenbergh. During that period, he was also introduced to Belgian avante garde artists of the 1920s such as Victor Servanckx; Karel Maes; Pierre-Louis Flouquet and Marthe Donas. He also continues to be influenced increasingly by Russian Constructivism, Italian Futurism and the Bauhaus school.
Apart from South Africa, Ken’s paintings have found homes in the United States, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
