Peter Meikle was born in 1980 in South Africa,
and grew up in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe.
A self-taught artist, his early work consisted mainly
of pastel and pencil drawings on a wide variety of subjects from portraits to land and sea-scapes, always in a highly detailed, realistic style.
Since 2008 Peter Meikle has been working predominantly on landscapes, both natural and man-made, in oil,
after briefly spending time working with internationally renowned artist Larry Norton.
Peter's style and subject matter is particularly inspired
by the meticulous precision of the Academic painters
of the 19th century, and the American photo-realist painters of the 1960's and '70's, as well as
being influenced by painters of urban landscapes such
as the 18th century Venetian artist Canaletto. More recent influences have been South African artists such as John Kramer and Keith Alexander.
Peter has recently begun exploring portrait painting -
the life size self portrait 'The Stand' being selected for the Top 40 Finalists in the Sanlam Portrait Awards in 2015.
