Ron trained in commercial art and display, theatre and interior design in Johannesburg, South Africa. Although he produced comparatively little fine-art before he was thirty, he had paintings accepted to the former Transvaal Academy on two occasions. In 1960 he studied Fine Art part-time at the Central School of Art in London while working in a commercial Art Studio. On his return to Johannesburg in 1962, he worked in the advertising industry, later freelancing in interior design and display. Versatile in subject matter, Ron’s work shows his mastery of any medium. He depicts nature in every form, from feathers to fauna; landscapes of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa; from forests to fishermen, tranquil beaches to the rugged West Coast, riverbeds, harbours and sand dunes; the uniqueness of Namaqualand to the history of District Six and the Malay Quarter. His passion for steam trains is evident in varied representations, one of which hangs in the Spoornet Museum. A Retrospective Exhibition was held in May 2013 when 114 works were exhibited. |
