Ron Waldeck has been painting for the last 20 years,
10 of which have been as a full time artist.
He started his career engraving on brass sheet. Engraving on brass allows
for very little error and hence the pattern for very detailed work se
in. He has always been a lover of wild life and birds in particular. Their
many forms and combinations of colour have always been a source of fascination
for him.
Waldeck is originally from Zimbabwe and he spent many years in the bushveld
as a result of the Rhodesian Bush War and hence was able to observe wild
life in the natural habitat. This experience inspired his decision to
concentrate on painting animals and birds. Fifteen years of living in
the Low Veld, in Nelspruit, a stones throw away from the Kruger National
Park provided many opportunities to travel and observe wild life in the
South African bush.
Ron has exhibited his work at many galleries in and around Johannesburg,
in Namibia, in Botswana as well as further a field; twice in Frankfurt,
Germany at the Ambient Trade Fair supply a German gallery from time to
time. His work has been well received.
Recently Ron has moved to the cape and embarked on a new series he calls
‘Personal Touch’. These are close up portrait studies of the
wild life he loves so much. Careful observation of detail, a feature of
his work, is explored to the limit in these.
Ron’s medium of choice is gouache. He believes this to be the ultimate
medium for achieving detail. Besides this he occasionally paints with
acrylic and oil media.
The series ‘Personal Touch’ has prompted him to launch a
range of Giclee Prints in editions of 120 of each image with 10 Artist
Proofs. These are locally produced and of extremely high quality.
