Shirley Howells was born and educated in
Cape Town where she lived until 1965 before relocating to Durban. Although
she showed an aptitude for art in her youth, she was, as a result of circumstances,
unable to explore her talent. However, in 1986 she signed up for a two year
Fine Arts Course at the Technical College and thereafter furthered her studies
under the tutelage of landscape painter John Smith, for a further two years.
Early on her work won the attention of both local and overseas collectors
and in 1997 she was afforded a very successful solo exhibition in the United
States.
Although she works in all media, she has latterly leaned almost exclusively towards the use of oils as her chosen medium. Joining the Watercolour Society of South Africa in 2003, she achieved Associate status in 2005, during which time she had a number of works judged “best on show” by both the public and the society. In 2012 she once again reverted to the use of watercolour and, at the first selection of the year, received a “highly commended” for a selected item.
Her work has been well received and purchased by visitors to South Africa from Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, England, Germany, Canada, the United States and the Netherlands. Both South Africa and overseas galleries presently represent her. The state president of Tanzania has included two of her works in his collection. Her work has been bought by individual collectors all over South Africa and she has received commissions for both corporate work and portrait studies.
Since 1995 she has won numerous awards for both drawing and painting and has had work judged “best on show” by both selectors and the public. One of her works has been included in an international book on still life/flowers, the publication of which was launched in January 2004. In 2000, she successfully participated in the annual Art in the Park exhibition in Pietermaritzburg. Two of her paintings are included in the “Unity Canvas”, commemorating 9/11, which has been on display throughout the United States.
In 2012, one of her works was selected by the movie producer Anant Singh to be used on the set of “A Long Walk to Freedom”.
For Shirley, painting is a passion and has become an on-going journey of exploration and discovery.
