Theo Ntuntwana on the Ncedisizwe Ceramic Project
‘Our aim was to address the unemployment issue by trying to find
a way to train and empower youth and women. We hoped to share with others
the skills we had been taught. We felt that by teaching other people,
the project would benefit because we would find new talent, who could
produce excellent functional pieces as well as art masterpieces. Currently,
we have three artists under our wings and still strive to breed other
artists from the community. We are artists who love animals and plants.
We always try to display them in a harmonious way. Our most popular pieces
often feature elephants, hedgehogs, snakes and tortoises. In fact, our
logo is a tortoise. Our pieces are made spontaneously; we have no preconceived
ideas about what the final product will be. We just set down and pick
up a brush and let the ideas flow.’
