I grew up in Langa. From an early age
I enjoyed drawing and sketching. I attended Joe Slovo High School in Khayelitsha.
After school I commenced art studies at Sivuyile College in 1993 where
I was regarded as the best art student. At the
same time, I participated in art workshops were I met experienced and
established artists.
From 1995 from 1999 I participated in workshops at the
Michaelis School of Fine Art (UCT), The South African National Gallery
(SANG), Community Art Project (CAP) and in various mural painting workshops.
In 1997 I took part in the Gauloises Art Competition at the Grahamstown
Art Festival and at the Nico Malan Theatre.
I took part in a variety of group exhibitions during
the nineties, which have encouraged me to assess the standard of my work
and to measure my artistic worth and progress against each other.
These include exhibitions at :
AVA
Groot Constantia Gallery
Cape Gallery
Robben Island
Standard Bank
Soekor Galleries
The Castle of Good Hope
Sanlam
The Framery Gallery (Sea Point).
Reference to my work
My works are about the lifestyles of the Black communities in the Townships,
rich and the poor, about their beliefs and how they spend their time when
they are not working or unemployed. I have drawn my inspiration from the
many living and dead artists both black and white.
To all of these people I say Thank you.
1988 while doing my standard 4 at Moshesh primary school,
Langa, I used to take a train after school to Woodstock to attend art
classes at Community Art Project (CAP). I was from then that I never stopped
art.
