| Shirley Howells was born and educated in
Cape Town where she lived until 1965 before relocating to Durban. Although
she showed an aptitude for art in her youth, she was, because of circumstances,
unable to explore her talent. However, in 1986 she signed up for a two year
Fine Arts Course at the Technical College and thereafter furthered her studies
under the tutelage of landscape painter John Smith, for a further two years.
Early on her work won the attention of both local and overseas collectors
and in 1997 she was afforded a very successful solo exhibition in the United
States. In February 2000 she was included in a shared exhibition in Plymouth,
United Kingdom.
She works in a broad range of media, focussing consistently on the use
of light, texture and colour. She is well known for her portrait studies.
During the period 1993-1998 she participated in many Group Exhibitions
in Natal, winning the Peter Moir Drawing Award in both 1995 and 1998,
and in the same years obtaining Best on Show for a pastel portrait study,
and Highly Commended for a watercolour floral. In 1998 she obtained best
of Show for an oil landscape and Best on Show any medium for an oil still
life. In June 2000 she participated in the annual Art in the Park Exhibition
in Pietermaritzburg where the high standard of her work was commented
on my both the public and many of her fellow artists.
She is permanently represented by Moore's Africa Gallery in Birmingham,
USA, and in South Africa her work can be seen at many galleries including
The Cape Gallery, Cape Town.
Collectors from Canada, United States, Belgium, Germany, Italy and England,
as well as New Zealand have purchased her work and she is well represented
in South Africa and Namibia. Her religious art can be found in the Transkei
Seminary and also Marianhill Monastery.
