"This painting captures the essence of Topolino, affectionately known as "the last real corner shop" on Kloof Street. Italian for Mickey Mouse, Topolino was a timeless establishment that defied the rise of supermarkets and modern eateries. It was owned by Panayiotis Tsamras, but everyone knew him as Peter. He had been running the shop since 1971. Prior to that I believe it was run by the Sher family. It was more than just a shop—it was a testament to the enduring spirit and a vibrancy of the city’s history.
A closer look reveals a blue and white Greek flag in the window, a subtle tribute to Panayiotis's heritage. Inside, the shelves presented a fascinating blend of everyday necessities and unique curiosities, truly making it a "signature shop" for those seeking something special. Despite Panayiotis's lament about the decline of small businesses, his unwavering dedication to Topolino was evident. This painting serves as more than just a depiction of a shop; it's a portal into a place where memories, resilience, and unique character converged—a beloved landmark that, regrettably, closed its doors in 2017." |
