About the artwork: Midnight all Day, as the title indicates is about the dreamworld, and mankinds' unconscious stream of thought. It is believed that the average person will spend approximately 25 years sleeping in the course of their lifetime. Everybody dreams, whether they re-collect or remember their dreams or not, and the language of dreams is usually visual, and often cloaked in symbolism. Through such symbolism, we are able to interpret and explore the human mind, as Jung stated; "Visual images have the quality of the human soul". My work has been called symbolist by Hadyn Proud, curator of Iziko Museum, in an essay he wrote for an opening address for an exhibition (please see attached). I concurr with this description, as most often images or ideas simply present themselves to me, fairly unconsciously and I do not try and interpret them or understand them, until later. This particular work is an example of this process. The imagery of water is symbolic of the creative unconscious, of chaos and of the ebb and flow of life that we are born into - the "water of life". The fluidity of water is also symbolic of the fluidity of time, of birth and death and perpetual re-incarnation of the human soul. The disparate arrangement of figures - the newborn baby, with the boat shaped figure, the mermaid, the dogs the circus monkey all have the surreal qualities of a dreamworld. Some of the figures appear to be sleeping - the male figure, crouched in a foetal position, while a sleeping woman floats by, also representative of spiritual awareness or lack of it in humans. The images of dogs are symbolic of human emotions, where in the RH panel, the dogs are friendly, and trying to swim and stay afloat, the dog-like figures in the LH panel are balancing on a see-saw, and are representative of the same |

emotions found in the Tarot Card; The Moon (the image of two dogs fighting). The idea of the human body being a receptive vessel for a soul is suggested by the image of the body as a boat - or a life raft - this indeed is the only vessel we have to stay afloat in this life-time. Hence the ghostly head, with a flapping sail, the "male boat", with the masked mermaid resting upon it not quite of this world, but again symbolising the masculine and feminine qualities inherent in every human in varying measure. The female figure with the male mask embodies similar ideas. The flosam and jetsam of a tidal flood - the "men at work" sign, the traffic cone and flag, the floating buoy and the life-ring represent things that present themselves to us in life - subliminal messages or directions. The tree of course would be symbolic of the Tree of Life or each individual's potential, and like the Tarot Card: The Hanging Man, we are not sure whether the roots are the branches or the other way around, again symbolic of the condition of human consciousness and development, and the spiritual work we are meant to do in our life-time. The eye, is a universal symbol of wisdom, and is also a "mirror of the soul", the hand is the hand of the initiate or seeker, wishing to acquire secret or occult wisdom. Again the fishing nets are also suggestive of fishing for sustenance in this case a spiritual sustenance to feed the unconscious soul. | ||||||
