ALCHEMICAL DIAGRAMS |
This exhibition comprises two collaborations, one with astrologer Joanne Jardine to produce the Tarot Deck, and the other is an extension of this project, in collaboration with John Bauer, the Potter. I have been working over the last year with astrologer, Joanne Jardine collaborating on a deck of Tarot cards. The idea of creating my own Tarot Deck, started during my research for my MFA Thesis - Moria, A Eulogy of Folly, when I began looking at Alchemical Engravings from the Mutus Liber, Robert Fludd and Nicholas Flamel engravings, and viewing various Tarot Decks, such as the Visconti Deck (circa 1450), the well known and most widely used Rider- Waite and the Marseilles Deck. These influenced my works from that period, most obviously with the large etching; The Empress and the Wheel of Fortune. It has taken me over 10 years to begin with the card project again, and in my research, I have referred mostly to the format of the Marseilles Deck (circa 1748), with additional reference to Aleister Crowley's Book of Thoth, which describes in detail his interpretation of the Tarot. Other influences have been an ongoing interest in Alchemical Texts, the writings of Johannes Fabricius, Eliphas Levi and Robert Allen Bartlett, amongst many more. The collaborative work with Johan Bauer lies more on the side of Alchemy. John has taken some of my Tarot etchings, re-organised the design into clay and porcelain and in his own magical way, transformed them with his knowledge of metals and glazes in his furnace. The product of my creative imagination has become calcined in the kiln and recreated in another medium. Solve et Coagula - the artwork has undergone a cycle of life, death and rebirth, exalting matter in Alchemical tradition. |
